"Belgian Jonagold is struggling"

In the past 10 years, apple orchards in Flanders have decreased in size by a third. The Jonagold variety, in particular—on the market since the 1990s—appears to be struggling. "Young people are increasingly opting for sweeter apples rather than sweet-and-sour ones," said Dany Bylemans, director of the research institute Proefcentrum Fruitteelt, in an interview with VRT. "Over the past 10 to 15 years, Poland has invested heavily in apple production. They learned the trade here and took that knowledge back to Poland."
