The first commercial quantities of British-grown strawberries for 2025 have started arriving in Tesco stores following nearly three weeks of warm, sunny weather. The early harvest, led by growers from The Summer Berry Company in Colworth, West Sussex, is expected to reach shoppers in time for Easter.
Favorable weather conditions have helped produce nearly 200 tonnes of strawberries so far—around 50 tonnes more than the same period last year. This equates to approximately 500,000 punnets, initially destined for Tesco stores in East and West Sussex, with possible availability in surrounding areas.
Tesco confirmed that the first varieties to hit shelves are Malling Centenary and Fandango. These varieties are known for their size, vivid color, and softer texture. According to the retailer, the strawberries have benefited from the recent dry and sunny conditions, which can enhance natural sugar levels and improve firmness and flavor.

Jack Darnes, Commercial Director at The Summer Berry Company, said that the early sunshine has helped boost the season's initial output. The company is optimistic about the months ahead, citing a combination of favorable weather and modern cultivation methods.
In 2024, The Summer Berry Company and Wicks Farm, both located in West Sussex, became the first UK growers to produce strawberries commercially throughout the entire year. During the Christmas period alone, they harvested 38 tonnes—up 40% from the previous year.
The 400g punnets of British strawberries will be sold at £2.50 each.
