Avocado beer proving popular in AU

A new craft beer made from avocados is apparently going down a treat with locals in the Western Australian town of Yallingup.

A local brewery has taken the fruit, which is grown in abundance in the region, and turned it into beer.

Daniel Wind runs the Bushshack Brewery in Yallingup in the South West, specialising in flavoured beers.

Mr Wind made the beer as an experiment for the state's inaugural Avocado Festival last month, but said it was such a hit, he planned to make more.

"We've been going through a keg of it a week here," Mr Wind said. "Based on peer group pressure and public opinion we will be making more of it."

Mr Wind was delivered 161 avocados from a local grower, experiencing a boom in production.

The avocado imparted bitterness into the beer, having a similar effect to hops, but more subtle.

Mr Wind said while avocados were seasonally abundant in the region, more so than hops, they would never replace hops in the brewing process.
