Fruit and vegetable exports are in full-swing. This year the sector intends to export over 2,500 tons of fruit and vegetables. Production on a local scale is better than the last few years. Many sugar cane growers have turned to growing fruit destined for export, many to pineapples. Pineapples are now available year-round.
The ten fresh products that are successfully exported are : ''Victoria'' pineapple, litchi, passion fruit, pepper, capsicum, breadfruit, jackfruit, avocado, papaya and anthurium flowers. Main markets are France (67.8%), Holland (11.1%), followed by Switzerland, Belgium and the UK.
An increase in export has been noticed since 2010 when 1,737 tons were exported compared to 1,905 tons in 2011 and 2,489 tons in 2012. The government is supporting agricultural growth in this sector. A wide panoply of measures were announced in the 2014 budget in order to boost the sector.
