Sydney Markets: First box of cherries goes under the hammer

Each year a five kilogram box of cherries is auctioned off to mark the beginning of the stone fruit season at Sydney Markets, with money raised going to a selected charity.

The first box of cherries of the Australian season has gone under the hammer at the Sydney Markets at Flemington, to raise money for the Save our Sons Duchenne Foundation. The cherries fetched $30,000 last year, and this time around they beat that figure with the first box going for $31,000.

Auction ambassador Rosa Arcella Chris Smith it’s all for a good cause: “It’s a celebration all our summers fruits coming into season. It’s a time for our industry to get together and raise funds for Save Our Sons. And most importantly, we want to encourage everyone to eat more fresh fruit and veggies.”

As reported on 2gb.com, a mammoth bid of $31,000 was the top bid this year, and that’s more than $6000 per kilogram.
