New mandarin variety to hit the European market

There will soon be a new variety of mandarin on the market - the Eden. It has taken years to develop but is believed to have the perfect characteristics needed to satisfy the demands of the European consumer.

Only one container of this new fruit variety has been shipped from Israel to Europe. This single container is the only one that will be exported for the season. This new seedless mandarin variety will be distributed in France and the Netherlands. The smooth-skinned Eden is very easy to peel and is said to be very sweet.

The Edens have been packed in 7kg trays. “We decided on this to give the fruit a better presentation and also to give it a higher value”, says Rafi Zuri. He is Galilee Export’s Citrus Manager. “Galilee Export is proud to ship a new variety of mandarin to the market.”

This new mandarin variety was developed by the Israeli Agricultural Research Organization, the Volcani Center. “The fruit was packed at Yofe packing house, a small packing house specializing in the packing of high-quality mandarins”, says Rafi.

Rafi says the company wants to gauge the French and Dutch consumers’ response. “If the consumers in Europe like this new variety and are willing to pay a premium price, I believe more growers will plant it”, he explains. “Then, in few years we can export the Eden on a much bigger scale.”

Presently, there is only one main grower of this mandarin variety in Israel.”It is too soon to say how many growers will switch to this variety. Everyone is waiting to see if it is successful or not”, concludes the Citrus Manager.
