Fruits in the state capital have become much more affordable than the green vegetables, courtesy short supply of leafy greens. People in the city are feeling the pinch as prices of veggies have surpassed that of fruits in last few days. Grapes and oranges are easily available at Rs 50-60 (€0.77) per kilograms, but vegetables like bitter gourd, cluster beans have crossed Rs 100 (€1.28) bar.
Being sold at Rs 120 per kilograms, there are hardly any takers for bitter gourd. Similarly cluster beans cost Rs 100 per kilogram and drums sticks costs Rs 80 here at vegetable market. Vendors have attributed veggies price rises to short supplies in the market.
Increasing demand for seasonal vegetables like bitter guard, capsicum, beans and diminishing supply have pushed up their rates. Only a few vegetables like potato and onions are available at relatively affordable prices. Usually with onset of summer, the price of vegetable scales up as the supply gets shortened. Only potatoes and onions are within the reach of people as their cost are hovering around Rs10 per kilograms.
