For the second time since 1993, the banana supply available in the Spanish market in January exceeded 55,000 tons. Furthermore, the volume imported was 2,000 tons greater than that shipped by the Canary Islands. Thus, the market share of imported bananas ranged between 44% and 59% of the available supply in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. This is between 10 and 11% more than in same month of 2018.
In January 2019, 30,558 tons were shipped from the Canary Islands, while imports, mainly from Africa and Latin America, amounted to 32,678 tons. Since re-exports stood at 8,177 tons, Spanish consumers had access to some 55,060 tons of bananas. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in January has ranged from a minimum of 44% to a maximum of 59% of the supply available in Spain.
The main suppliers of imported bananas in January were Costa Rica, with 9,454 tons, Cote D'Ivoire, with 8,385 tons, Colombia, with 5,672 tons, and France, with 2,550 tons. Together, these four countries supplied 80% of the total volume.
