The Taiwanese sugar apple is one of the most popular Taiwanese fruits among Chinese consumers. Rao Qingling, the mayor of Taidong in Taiwan, personally supports the marketing of Taiwanese sugar apples. Mayor Rao announced on April 23rd that the overall export value of Taiwanese sugar apples reached 1 billion NTD [32 million USD] in March. The export volume reached 12 thousand tons and 98% of that volume was destined for the Chinese market. The export volume and the export value both set new records.
A spokesperson of the Taidong County Bureau for Agriculture stated that the production season of Taiwanese sugar apples begins every year in October and lasts until April in the subsequent year. Relevant data from the Ministry of Finance shows that the export value of sugar apples from Taidong reached 910 million NTD [29 million USD] in 2016, 480 million NTD [15 million USD] in 2017, and 870 million NTD [28 million USD] in 2018. The limited export value in 2017 was the result of a typhoon that wrecked the sugar apple harvest.
