China: Xinli is a demonstration Village for Cape Gooseberry Cultivation

“The cape gooseberry is a fruit that the public is not yet very familiar with. It is mainly grown in northeast China. Cape gooseberries are round and evenly shaped and rich in nutrition. The fruit when ripe is sweet, juicy and refreshing,” says Gao, the Manager of a cooperative.

The Xinli Cape Gooseberry and Strawberry Planting Professional Cooperative is located in Xinli Village, Hongqi Town, Dandong City, Liaoning Province. The village is a demonstration village under Liaoning Province’s “One Village, One Product” initiative, and is mainly engaged in the cultivation and marketing of Hongyan strawberries and cape gooseberries. The village’s production of Hongyan strawberries last season was high, and prices were stable. The marketing season of strawberries is coming to an end, and the cooperative is now fully committed to preparing for the marketing season of cape gooseberries.

“Compared with last year, our production of cape gooseberries this year has increased by about 20%. This is partly due to the scientific, organic growing method we have adopted to ensure that the origin is natural and not polluted. Another reason is that the weather in the Dandong region has been fine this year, and the temperature differences between day and night have been favorable for the development of the fruits’ brix level and flavor.

As cape gooseberries do well in sunlight, the yield is high, and they hit the market early. The marketing season of cape gooseberries lasts from June to September. This season, prices for the first products on the market are high, but during the peak season when the volumes stabilize, they will decline to a stable level.”

Gao went on to say: “Our cooperative was established in 2016 and now has 196 members. We regularly provide training on scientific planting techniques and management for our members. Our cooperative has a wide network of sales channels, whether it’s e-commerce, direct wholesale, or supermarket direct sales. Although people are not yet very familiar with cape gooseberries, our sales volumes are Increasing year by year, and this fruit’s popularity is rising.”
