“During the past six months, the export prices for Chinese ginger have soared, rising 40% in just one month. Compared with the same period of the previous year, the market performance has been unusual,” said Jason, Sales Manager at Anqiu Tailai Foods Co., Ltd.

“Under normal circumstances, June and July are the off-season for exports. The increase in prices during this period is mainly caused by two factors. First of all, last year, Shandong Province, the main producing area of China’s ginger, frequently experienced extreme weather and natural disasters such as flooding. The yield and quality of ginger have been affected to some extent, especially the volume of higher quality ginger that can be exported has been reduced sharply. Moreover, speculators started to store large amounts of goods from early stages after having observed a possibility in market shortage, in order to manipulate the market in a later period."

“In the face of the rapidly rising prices of ginger, most of the overseas traders are cautious, resulting in the number of orders placed on the Chinese ginger to drop. The harvest of new season ginger will begin in mid-October and enter the processing season in December. It is expected that the ginger export market will stay relatively stable before that. This, of course, also depends on the degree of market intervention of speculators."
