With an investment of 19.7 million peso, la Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) says they will install a phytosanitary checkpoint in the maritime terminal of Puerto Morelos.
Alicia Ricalde Magaña, general director of Apiqroo, says the new checkpoint will be installed yet this year to provide the same services offered by the ports of Progreso and Veracruz.
Ricalde Magaña says that the installation of the phytosanitary checkpoint will benefit the import and export of items such as fresh and frozen vegetables, grains and legumes, which will allow the hotel and restaurant industry of Riviera Maya and Quintana Roo in general, to be able to supply these products at better prices.
She added that this will place the state in competitive conditions and generate new trade routes both nationally and internationally.
“It is a point that will allow the export of local crops such as citrus, pineapple and pitaya, as well as processed products including sugar, while importing inputs required by the chimneyless industry,” she explained.

Ricalde Magaña said that the Puerto Morelos site, which in 2018 registered over 30 tons of import and 9.2 tons of export, will be a real possibility of expanding that service. She said that 19.7 million peso will be invested in the construction of a two-level building on an area of 842.73 square meters for the review of plant products, while on the ground floor, there will be cold rooms, laboratories and a sanitary area.
She stressed that the project is part of a comprehensive investment plan to improve the infrastructure and services of the ports that Apiqroo operates and manages, which will be executed in two stages.
The first stage, she says, will begin this year with an investment of 12.7 million peso, which will be ready in December 2019. The second stage of the center will begin in 2020 with an investment of almost 7 million peso.
“This second phase, consisting of the construction of the area for merchandise, will conclude the project that will be located in the only maritime port terminal of Quintana Roo for the handling of loose and containerized cargo,” she added.
The head of the Apiqroo mentioned that the company Acero y Equipos del Caribe SA de CV won the tender for the construction of the work.
