Olivier Maugeais, Pom’Evasion:

“The French apple sector is mainly active on the export market”

“Since the launch of the French apple campaign in September, the export market is quite active, whether to England or to Asia,” reports Olivier Maugeais of Pom’Evasion, a company located in the Centre-Val-de-Loire region. “The domestic market, on the other hand, is relatively calm for conventional varieties. We are now confronted with operators who have apples at third picking, and a more aggressive offer.”

Low price for the pound
Pom’Evasion exports a lot to the UK. “For now, we feel the effects of Brexit, especially on the value. Regarding the demand from our clients, there is globally no impact. The demand and dynamism are the same, except that the value is lower because of the pound. The price is much lower than last year and prices are automatically impacted.” Pom’Evasion is getting ready for Brexit, especially in terms of logistics. “We organize our logistical flows in such a way to create the least impact possible. Logistics is the big work first and foremost.”

The volumes for Pom’Evasion are globally larger than last year. “We started the campaign faster than last year.” The quality of the apples is very good this year for Pom’Evasion, both in terms of color and at the organoleptic level.

Strong start for organic apples
For the organic apples and apples in conversion, the launch of the campaign on the domestic market was more active than for the conventional varieties. “The dynamism is good. It remains a niche market, but a market that is growing and starting very strongly.” The company is launching the organic Ariane and claims that “the demand for this apple is very high.”

Launch of the Jazz apple
This week, Pom’Evasion launches the Jazz variety in conventional production. “We have a very nice harvest, in quantity, quality and even in caliber.”

Attendance at the fairs
In the coming weeks, Pom’Evasion will attend two fairs. From October 20th to 22nd, at Natexpo in Paris, it will present “agroecology” for a 200% organic offer, with a focus on the organic Xenia pear. The company will also attend Fruit Attraction in Madrid, where it will continue to present its approach on agroecology. “We will also present the organic and conventional Xenia pear.”
