The EU Fruit and Vegetable Market Observatory was officially presented on October 18. It will provide greater transparency and short-term analyses to a key sector for European agriculture, which accounts for around 24% of the value of the EU's agricultural production.
There will be periodic updates with a wide range of market data, such as prices, production and trade, obtained through market analyses and short-term and medium-term outlook reports. At the same time, a board of market experts for each sector will meet regularly to discuss the situation and market data.
The observatory has 4 subgroups: top fruit (apples and pears), citrus fruit, stone fruit (peaches and nectarines) and tomatoes.
The European Commission has launched this and other observatories to help the European agricultural sector to deal more effectively with market volatility and ensure greater transparency.
