The Navel orange harvest in Hunan begins in the middle of November. The harvest season is expected to last one month. The overall production volume declined this year as a result of drought. Manager Chen of Juncheng Fruit Seedlings recently talked about the production and retail conditions of Navel oranges in Hengyang, Hunan.
"Hunan experienced severe drought in the later stage of the production season. The production volume declined by an estimated 30%. However, the product quality is still good. The size of the fruit and the color of the fruit peel are all ideal. The sugar content is around 13%. The price of Navel oranges in Hengyang does not fluctuate much. The price was around 3-3.5 yuan [0.43-0.50 USD] per 0.5 kg last year and is expected to remain at that level this year," stated manager Chen.
"Most of the domestic fruits with a large surface area devoted to their production are improved by imported fruit varieties. We mainly use the American Newhall Navel orange variety. That variety was introduced from the USA, but underwent years of research, test planting, and improvement before wide-scale plantation in China. The Newhall Navel orange is quite suitable for our orchards and the flavor of this variety is quite popular with Chinese consumers," explained manager Chen.
"Our orchard covers an area of 53 hectares. We sell all our oranges in the context of rural tourism. Residents of Hengyang and nearby citizens visit our orchard during the weekends and the holidays, and they participate in the harvest. Rural tourists can have fun while at the same time learning a lot about agricultural production. The demand from rural tourists for our oranges exceeds supply every year."
In addition to Navel oranges, Juncheng Fruit Seedlings also produces Newhall Navel oranges, Sanhong honey pomelo, and Hongbaoshi green pomelo.
