The British retailer Tesco will open its first store in Spain in the Murcian municipality of Mazarrón, which has the largest community of Britons in the Region of Murcia. Most of the people from the United Kingdom live in the Camposol urbanization, whose population is mostly English, although it also houses residents of other nationalities.
With the opening of the Mazarrón store, Tesco has started the implementation of its plan to expand in the most tourist-oriented areas of Spain and Portugal. Ibiza or the municipality of Mijas, in Malaga, may be the next destinations for the biggest chain in the United Kingdom, which is also present in Europe and Asia.
According to the information reported by specialized publications, Tesco has partnered with the Overseas Imports group, based in Alicante, to create the supermarket brand The Food Co. After this first experience in a tourist enclave, Tesco could make the leap to cities like Madrid and Barcelona.
The new 1,000 square meter Tesco supermarket is located in the La Pirámide shopping center in Puerto de Mazarrón.
One out of every four permanent residents in this municipality comes from abroad. The opening of the store has been greatly anticipated by customers from Mazarrón and nearby areas, given that it has started selling some of the most typically British products.
