The international onion market depends to some degree on the operations of the Dutch onion market. The overall supply volume in the Dutch onion market increased in comparison with last year because the weather conditions remained stable this year. China is also a large producer of onions, but even the onion price in China is influenced by the Netherlands.
Mr. Xue Cuncai of Jinxiang County Cuncai Agricultural Trade Co., Ltd. recently talked about current conditions in the onion market: "The main export markets for Chinese onions are in Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The export volume of Chinese onions declined because of the price of Dutch onions. The price of Chinese onions is quite a bit higher than the price of Dutch onions. For example, the Netherlands exports yellow onions to Malaysia for 320 USD per ton, while China exports yellow onions to Malaysia for 390 USD per ton."
"The export price of Chinese onions reached a record height, but the price will naturally come down. This is because of several reasons: first, the product quality of Dutch onions is high and their price is low. Second, Southeast Asian countries also have domestic onions that are about to enter the market. This will supplement their shortage. When onion supply from India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Myanmar enters the market as well, then Chinese onions will gradually lose their market share. The volume of orders is in decline, so we expect the price to come down as well."
"This year the export volume of onions has already reached 8 thousand tons, which is 30% more than last year. Our onions come from production areas in Jinxiang County. We mainly export them to the Middle East, Israel, Iraq, Austria, the Netherlands, and South Africa."
