Success of centuries-old Greek organic tomatoes portrayed in a documentary

The Greek documentary When tomatoes met Wagner, by Marianna Economouh, was shot in Elias; a dying rural, isolated village. Two witty cousins, Christos and Alecco, join the old ladies in this place in order to grow tomatoes together. With their knowledge and a little help from Wagner's music, they pursue their dream: exporting organic tomato jars all over the world.

Challenging industrial agriculture and growing organic tomatoes with centuries-old seeds, they sell tomato jars and preserves made in an unorthodox manner. The export of organic products is a very competitive market, but the unexpected success catches the whole town by surprise, lifting everyone's spirits and improving the local economy.

Thanks to these Wagnerian tomatoes, the people of Elias have been able to glimpse a future where the crisis that struck Greece a few years ago has been left behind. It is an endearing story about the power of human relationships and the importance of reinventing agriculture in times of crisis.
