The Dominican Republic is looking to position itself as the world's largest exporter of greenskin tropical avocado thanks to the Exporta Quality Program (PEC), funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The general director of the program, Brian Rudert, said that greenskin avocados are only sold in 10% of stores in the United States that sell this type of fruit and that people still don't know this kind of avocado. However, the great potential that this variety of avocado has in the North American market was confirmed via a campaign of promotions at fairs and tastings held in different parts of the US.
Carlos Puello, the director of the PEC Monitoring and Evaluation Center, highlighted the good reception that the private-collective greenskin avocado brand had when it was presented at the largest agricultural fair in the United States, which took place last October.
Rudert also highlighted the importance of the Quality Export Program had in promoting agricultural exports to the United States. He also stated that the Dominican Republic was the only country in the Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Central America, and the Dominican Republic, known as DR-Cafta, that was not taking advantage of agricultural export opportunities to the United States.
