Peruvian mango exports to the US have continuously increased in recent years. According to Manuel Michel, the executive director of the National Mango Board, NMB, “consumption among American consumers increased by 68% from 2005 to 2018. There has been constant growth and we think that this will continue to progress in the next few years." The goal of the NMB is to increase the consumption of this fruit in the US from 1.4 kilos per capita in 2018 to 3.2 kilos in 2027.
We think exports to the US will increase by approximately 2 or 3% this year, he added. This organization has been working in coordination with the producers of the countries that export mango to the US market, including Peru, in the promotion and research of new varieties.
The Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (Apem) stated that Peru had exported 204,000 tons of fresh mango in the 2017-2018 campaign, 70% of which came from the region of Piura. The Kent mango is the most demanded variety in the US and European markets.
According to Michel, consumption will continue to grow if producers maintain the quality of the mango, keep supplying a continuous volume to the market, and carry out good marketing strategies. “If you combine all that, the mango will follow the same steps as the avocado, whose demand is unstoppable in the US.”
