Skyrocketing vegetable prices in the Czech Republic due to extreme weather in Spain

Healthy diet lovers in the Czech Republic are having some unpleasant surprises in stores. Salad cucumbers are sold for more than 30 crowns a piece (about 1.20 Euro), which is twice as much as a week ago. Other vegetables, such as peppers, eggplant, zucchini and lettuce have also become significantly more expensive.

According to expert websites and a statement from the domestic food chamber, the extreme weather in Spain is behind many of these increases, as this country supplies about a quarter of the EU's total cucumber production. In recent weeks, Spain has been struggling with the impact of snowstorms, storms and floods.

“Vegetables are harvested continuously, and in the southern parts of Spain, this is done year-round, both in the open ground and in greenhouses. The recent weather has taken a toll on the open ground production and probably also that from greenhouses, and has caused logistical problems for the rest as well,” said Miroslav Koberna, of the Czech Food Chamber. Accordingly, there is a shortage in distribution warehouses in the Netherlands, which translates into both a reduction in the supply and rising prices.
