According to data from Faostat, the statistical agency of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 182,258.02 million kilos of tomatoes were produced in 2018, which was an all-time record. These were grown on 4,762,129 hectares, with an average yield of 3.83 kg / m².
The analysis of the statistics supplied by FAO reveals that the yield per square meter of tomatoes in Morocco exceeds the average one achieved in Spain, while that of the Netherlands is six times greater than Spain's. In 2018, Spain produced an average of 8.5 kg / m², while Morocco reached 8.83 kg / m² and Dutch greenhouses obtained 50.89 kg / m².
The world's largest producers
In 2018, China was the world's largest tomato producer, with 61,523.46 million kilos; 33.75% of the total produced worldwide. These tomatoes were grown on 1,035,709 hectares, with a yield of 5.94 kg / m².
The second largest producer in the world was India, with 19,377 million kilos of tomatoes produced on 786,000 hectares, with a yield of 2.47 kg / m².
The US ranks third with a volume of 12,612.14 million kilos, an area of 130,280 hectares and a yield of 9.68 kg / m².
The fourth place is for Turkey, with 12,150 million kilos, 176,430 hectares and a yield of 6.89 kg / m2.
The fifth position corresponds to Iran, with 6,577.11 kilos of tomatoes, grown on 158,991 hectares and an average yield of 4.14 kg / m².
Spain was the world's eighth largest producer, with a total of 4,768.59 million kilos of tomatoes grown on 56,128 hectares, with an average yield of 8.5 kg / m².
Spain's competitors
The tomato production in the Netherlands amounted to 910 million kilos in 2018, with an area of 1,788 hectares and a yield of 50.89 kg / m².
The Egyptian tomato production stood at 6,624.73 million kilos, with an area of 16,702 hectares and an average yield of 4.10 kg / m².
Italy produced 5,798.1 million kilos of tomatoes in that year, with 97,092 hectares cultivated and an average yield of 5.97 kg / m².
In Morocco, 1,409.44 million kilos were produced on 15,955 hectares, with a yield of 8.83 kg / m².
Lastly, Tunisia produced 1,357.62 million kilos on 24,195 hectares, with an average yield of 5.61 kg / m².
