Franklin Ginus and Randy van Dinter, founders of BeFrank Bananas, have cause to celebrate. Earlier this week, their first bananas arrived from Ecuador in the Netherlands. From Tuesday, 3 March, these new BeFrank branded bananas will be on the first greengrocers' shelves. The mission can then start in earnest. BeFrank wants to make the entire value chain fairer.
"Everyone must be able to earn a fair wage again. To achieve this, we will be completely transparent. BeFrank bananas are unusual in that they have been cultivated 100% fairly and sustainably. That is because BeFrank does far more for their workers and the environment than conventional banana producers," says Franklin.
"BeFrank goes much further than Fairtrade"
"For BeFrank, Fairtrade is a basic certification. BeFrank goes much further. And that is also necessary. There are still mountains of plastic waste along the roads leading to banana plantations. And laborers still earn very little. Half of them have no social security at all. Their children do not get enough to eat. And their homes have no electricity or running water."
"BeFrank considers that anything but fair. This brand, therefore, includes all these hidden costs in the consumer price. In this way, money is freed up. This money is used to set up programs in banana producing countries. These are aimed at supporting various issues. These issues include the environment, social security, and better work-life conditions for workers," concludes Franklin.
