Supplies of green onions are good and steady currently.
“Quality is great right now and the sizing is starting to come back,” says Phil Balestreri of Salinas, Ca.-based Steinbeck Country Produce Inc. who ships its green onions in the Nature's Reward label. Balestreri adds that supplies currently come from the Mexicali region. “We’ll probably see our large and jumbo supplies come on closer to May as it warms up. But supplies overall right now are on schedule with great quality.
While supplies are similar to this time last year, it is following the holiday snugness on green onion supplies. “After New Year’s, by the middle of the way through January, things started to become a little more available,” says Balestreri. “But then it stayed cold this year so supplies stayed on the tighter side throughout January and into early February.”
Demand also even
At the same time, demand right now for green onions is outstanding with great quality to meet demand, says Balestreri.
“Pricing has just been under $10 and that has been our market for the past couple weeks,” Balestreri adds. “Pricing on green onions had a pretty good run for a while at the end of 2019 and into early 2020. But then over the past couple of weeks, FOBs lowered with the increased supply industry wide.”
Looking ahead, Balestreri sees more of the same. “We are hopeful the market rebounds for the spring and we are excited to continue shipping our green onions,” says Balestreri.
