"Overall conditions in the Chinese pear market are stable"

The pear is an important fruit in the Chinese market. The consumer demand for Chinese pears has grown rapidly in the last few years. Pear farmers are investing in the development of new pear varieties that can help to improve the overall production volume. They hope the improved production volume will help to satisfy growing market demand. The new production season has not yet started at this moment, but pears are still available from refrigerated warehouses.

Mr. Chi of Chiteng Industry (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. sells Autumn Moon pears and Autumn Dew pears. He recently shared his insight in the current conditions on the Chinese pear market. "The market conditions for Autumn Moon pears and Autumn Dew pears are quite good at the moment. The Autumn Dew pears generally enter the market every year in the middle of July. The production volume has show a steadily growing trend in the last few years. We are usually able to sell our Autumn Dew pears until around the first of May in the subsequent year. The sales conditions of Autumn Dew pears are better than the sales conditions of Autumn Moon pears. Furthermore, the retail price of Autumn Moon pears has gone up in recent years because the overall production volume of Autumn Moon pears has gone down. The current retail price of Autumn Dew pears is around 6.5 yuan [0.92 USD] per 0.5 kg, while the retail price of Autumn Moon pears is around 8 yuan [1.13 USD] per 0.5 kg."

When asked about the impact of the last few weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Chinese pear industry, manager Chi replied, "as the spread of the corona virus has gradually been brought under control in China, many of the larger companies have resumed business. There has been some competition for distribution because large companies all resumed business around the same time, which in turn has led to traffic congestion on the highways as truck drivers hasten to clear the backlog of undelivered products. The wholesale fruit markets are currently selling Dangshan pears, Fengshui pears, Nanshui pears, and Imperial Crown pears. These pear varieties pose a threat to the market share of Autumn Moon pears and Autumn Dew pears. However, I do not foresee major problems because the flavors of different pear varieties are not the same and each pear variety therefore has their own dedicated customer base."

"We currently supply our products to Huizhan Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market in Shanghai, the Wholesale Fruit Market in Jiaxing, the Wholesale Fruit Market in Hangzhou, and the Jiangnan Wholesale Market in Guangzhou. At the same time, we also export our pears to Korea and Canada. As for the packaging of our pears, we mainly use either premium packaging or common packaging. The premium gift boxes contain 8-10 pears, while the common boxes contain around 10 kg of pears. In the future, we hope to further develop our export market in Korea and open up new export markets, for example in Australia."
