"Pandemic affects market conditions of Chinese watermelon varieties in different ways"

"The weather conditions in spring were very different from last year. Watermelon production areas in China frequently suffered from typhoons and low temperatures during spring 2020. Farmers have responded to these circumstances with additional measures to preserve the heat in watermelon farms. This is in addition to the plantation management practices developed over the last few years. In the end, the watermelons entered the Chinese market one week earlier than last year. The peak of the watermelon sales season is expected to take place between May 1st and June 1st." This is according to Mr. Zhang of Yurun (Beijing) Agricultural Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd.

"Now that the outbreak of COVID-19 is largely brought under control in China, buyers from all over the country are purchasing watermelons with enthusiasm. The market is running smoothly. The small Melon Princess watermelons are produced in greenhouses in Shandong and Henan. This means that the cost price is relatively high and the surface area devoted to the plantation of this variety is also quite small. The price is more or less the same as last year, around 4-5 yuan [0.56-0.71 USD] per 0.5 kg. Our sales have so far not been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic."

"Yurun was faced with the outbreak of COVID-19 around Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020] and the subsequent quarantine measures across the country, just like everybody else. We worked closely together with farmers, factory workers, and truck drivers to guarantee their safety as well as a steady supply of watermelons. We have not encountered problems that we could not solve. The impact of the pandemic is clear when you look at the overall market conditions. The overall sales volume declined. This is particularly true for low-end watermelon varieties such as Sweet King and Black Beauty. The sales volume of large, seedless watermelons is quite steady, because these watermelon varieties are suitable for the production of fruit cups. The top-quality Meidu and Melon Princess watermelon varieties are particularly popular. The price of Meidu watermelons is currently quite low in comparison with the period before May 1st last year. The price is now around 1 yuan [0.14 USD] per 0.5 kg."

"We mainly sell Melon Princess watermelons. We have developed this variety over years of careful selection to guarantee a beautiful and fresh appearance. This watermelon is a perfect round shape. And each watermelon is exactly ripe enough. The Melon Princess variety is well known for a natural fragrance, beautiful red fruit flesh, and perfect rows of black seeds. The flavor is crisp and fresh, and the sugar content is high. Furthermore, the fiber content is low. The Melon Princess watermelon tastes as fresh and pure as nature. That is exactly why this watermelon variety is so popular in the Chinese market."

"Yurun is specialized in supply chain services for the watermelon industry. The Yurun team has an abundance of experience in the selection and distribution of watermelons. They make predictions for the watermelon market based on information gathered from a large number of watermelon suppliers. Furthermore, the team personally visits watermelon production areas to forge friendly relations with watermelon farmers. The only way to guarantee top-quality watermelons is to secure top-quality supply."
