Purchases through online supermarkets in Greece increased by 307% in March, according to the quarterly report of Convert Group. This is a development that had been expected to happen in the next 5 years. In the 12th week of 2020 (March 16-22), online shopping recorded a record increase of 501% compared to the same week in 2019. It is also impressive that in the same week, the share of online shopping in the total turnover of the retail sector was 4.5 times greater than in the first week of the year (from 0.4% to 1.8%), which shows the speed with which Greeks are adopting the online channel for their purchases.
The number of visitors to the sites of the 8 largest online super markets exceeded 4 million in March, and if we take the mobile applications of the above and the new Sklavenitis channel, the number of visits has increased even more. At the same time, Greek searches for the term "online supermarket" on Google doubled in March.
Overall, the first quarter of 2020 shows that 30% of the value of the online "household basket" corresponds to fresh food (vegetables, fruits, dairy, fresh meat & fish, etc.), which is a sign of confidence in online super markets. The share of food in general (including beverages) is 69%.
