Varietal distribution of 2019/20 strawberry campaign in Huelva, Spain

"Just three strawberry varieties account for almost 72% of the total"

On April 28, the Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (Ifapa) presented a technical report with estimates on the varietal distribution of the 2019/2020 strawberry season in the province of Huelva.

According to the work carried out by the Strawberry Group of Ifapa, based on data provided by the companies that obtain and license the various programs, the choice of strawberry varieties in Huelva remains one of the most relevant aspects for producers. The report reveals that "three varieties alone account for almost 72% of the total."

The Florida Fortuna variety (hereinafter Fortuna), from the University of Florida, continues to be the most popular strawberry in Huelva, with a 36.2% share; 3.2% less than in the previous season (39.4%).

The second place is for the Rociera, from Fresas Nuevos Materiales S.A. (FNM), with a 25.6% share (26% last season).

In contrast, the other two varieties from FNM, the Primoris and the Rábida, record a different development. This season, the Primoris has a share of 2.3%, compared to 4.1% in the previous campaign, while the Rábida has a 6.1% share; a very similar result to that achieved in the two previous campaigns.

Regarding the varieties for exclusive use, it is worth highlighting those managed by Plant Sciences/Berry Genetics, with the Victory at the forefront. In recent years, this variety has maintained a stable presence, with a 10% share this campaign.

The Calinda variety, from the Fresh Forward program, has increased its share from 3.2% in the 2018-19 season to 4.9% today.

Lastly, it is worth noting the growth in the share of the Palmerita variety, from Masiá Ciscar S.A., which has gone from 1% last year to 3.4% in the current campaign.

The list of varieties also present with smaller shares includes the Savana (1.2%), San Andreas (1.1%), Leticia (1.0%) and Leyre (1.0%). The group that brings together other varieties accounts for 7.4% of the total.
