"Chinese nectarine price is high due to low production volumes"

The nectarine production season has officially begun in Chinese production areas and market supply is gradually growing.

Mr. Sun Junfeng of Shenzhen City Feng Fresh Treasure Fruit Co., Ltd. recently shared his analysis of the Chinese nectarine market: "We have already started harvesting nectarines in our glasshouse plantations in Shanxi. These are some of the highest-quality nectarines in China. Open-field nectarines are not ripe enough to harvest until around the 10th of June.

"As for the production volume, a cold snap during spring reduced the nectarine production volume by nearly 50% in comparison with last year. In some areas farmers lost their entire harvest. The production volume in glasshouse plantations did not decline. On the contrary, our production volume increased instead. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the production volume of nectarines is quite small. The price is relatively high, but the retail volume is not that large."

"Every year we produce only the '48 nectarine'. This variety has an excellent flavor and the shelf life is quite long, which makes this variety suitable for storage. The nectarine market is huge but also quite slow. The price generally starts high, but then continues to fall throughout the season. So far, the average price is higher than last year. The outbreak of COVID-19 had an impact on the general fruit market. Chinese consumers have less purchase power, which affects fruit sales. We sell fruit in various markets across the country. Our nectarines recently enter Shenzhen Wholesale Market. In addition to nectarines, we also sell other high-quality fruits such as Xinjiang Korla pears and Aksu apples, as well as top-quality Ya pears, Mi pears, and Shuijing pears, all from Hebei."
