The acreage for Egyptian sweet potatoes increases just about every year, and this year is no different. Compared to the previous season, the country has seen an increase in acreage of about 30 per cent. According to one exporter this doesn’t have to be a problem, as demand has increased as well.
With the new season for Egyptian sweet potatoes around the corner, Reda Ezz, CEO of All Fresh Egypt, looks back at the previous season. A successful season, Ezz states, mostly due to the absence of American sweet potatoes: “The Egyptian potatoes have certainly found their way to Europe in the season of 2019/2020. In total, Egypt has exported 56,000 tons at a value of 30 million US dollars. The season was pretty surprising, as the Egyptian sweet potatoes definitely benefited from the absence of the American sweet potatoes. These sweet potatoes were destroyed in the fields due to heavy rains. The prices for Egyptian sweet potatoes were pretty high, but the quality was very good, making the prices justifiable.”
The new season is about three weeks away, so Ezz is preparing for his sweet potatoes to reach the European market. “For us, as All Fresh Egypt, we aim to export about 1500 tons of sweet potatoes in the upcoming season, which starts around the 15th of July. Our main markets are mostly in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, although we also send small quantities to Italy. We grow, pack and export the produce ourselves.”
According to Ezz, the acreage of the Egyptian sweet potato is increasing steadily every year. “The Egyptian acreage for sweet potatoes is growing steadily, as the amount of hectares has increased by 30 per cent this season alone. This isn’t a problem, as the expectations are that demand will be higher than ever as well. As Fresh Egypt we also do our own natural curing for our sweet potatoes, to guarantee a long shelf life and good taste.” Ezz conclude
