Cheap imports affecting Russian peach prices

Producers in the southern regions of the Russian Federation have already started delivering the first lots of peaches, EastFruit analysts said. The stone fruit season has reportedly started around the same time as a year earlier, but the price of local peaches is much lower. According to market operators, these low prices for the peaches at the start of the season are a result of the rather large volumes of imported products on the market.

Peach prices stand at 65-120 rubles / kg ($ 0.91-1.69 / kg), depending on the quality, volume of the batch and other terms of the transaction. Russian producers say that selling peaches at higher prices is not possible due to the availability of cheaper fruits from Turkey, the average price of which ranges between 50 and 60 rubles / kg ($ 0.70-0.84 / kg).

Russian producers plan to start the mass sale of peaches from local farms no earlier than July 10, when the fruit's harvest will kick off in almost all producing regions. Despite the fact that this season's peach harvest will be much smaller than last year, most producers doubt that they will be able to keep prices even at the same level as then.
