Maria Antonia Rivera, the designated president and secretary of Economic Development, stated that, despite transferring its operations from Puerto Cortes to Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, the transnational Chiquita won't suspend its activity in Honduras and will keep its banana crops in the north of the country.
The official said that Chiquita Brands executives "made it clear that they are not leaving Honduras, and that they were just simplifying logistics operations. They will continue to plant 3,500 hectares in Valle de Sula, El Progreso, and Santa Rita, generating 4,000 jobs in the region, and using Puerto Cortes and Puerto Barrios (Guatemala)."
Rivera assured that the Government and the banana company would work together on the issues of logistics simplification.
