US Border Patrol find $30.5 million worth of meth hidden in Mexican onion shipment

Agents from the US Customs and Border Patrol discovered $30.5 million worth of methamphetamine hidden inside a shipment of fresh onions from Mexico.

Officials working at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge made the discovery on July 9. A Mexican citizen arrived at the bridge hauling a tractor-trailer with a shipment of onions. An CBP officer took a closer look at the shipment using non-intrusive imaging technology and found 221 packages of what seems to be methamphetamine, weighing 1,527 pounds hidden inside the roof of the trailer.

“This is certainly a substantial amount of methamphetamine that won’t make its final destination in the U.S. and seizing these harmful narcotics will most definitely help keep our communities safer,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Port of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas.

Customs agents seized the drugs, along with the truck and the trailer. The driver was arrested. The alleged methamphetamine has a street value of approximately $30,556,000. Agents with Homeland Security will be investigating.
