White bitter gourd, a local variety from Lanshan County, is known as the "king of bitter gourds” in China thanks to its long shape, white color, high yield, and excellent quality. From the 1980s, more than 2,600 mu of this variety is planted all year round in this county, and cultivation has spread to other provinces across China.
“Over the recent years, with the increasing popularity of this variety in the market and local authorities making an effort to create a local brand, the cultivation in Lanshan County has entered large-scale development, but at the same time, the market demand and sales channels are yet to be developed. Blind large-scale planting eventually led to slow sales seen this year.”

"At present, in addition to being supplied to local vegetable markets and surrounding counties, the products are also sent to Changsha, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and other local vegetable markets, but there are still large volumes that cannot be marketed and are rotten in the ground. Growers are eager to find new sales markets, especially supermarkets, fresh food delivery companies, and wholesalers."
"Considering the characteristics of bitter gourd, our product is not suitable for e-commerce. Our preferred sales areas include surrounding areas such as Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Jiangxi, as the distance and the time of transportation are short and the transportation cost is not too high."
