The introduction of chokos into supermarkets will only solidify its place as a staple in peoples' shopping baskets and menus, according to a major Sydney wholesaler.
Pro Bros Providore says demand for chokos is increasing massively.
"Whilst we used to only sell one box a month of chokos we are currently moving 10 times that so demand is going up dramatically," Director Robert Lo said. "Now is the peak time for chokos, they are available all year round from different sources, but the Queensland ones we are currently sourcing are best from June to October."

Also known as Chayote it is an edible plant belonging to the gourd family, native to Central America. In Australia chokos, with no major commercial production, are grown as vines in peoples gardens similar to passionfruit. Mr Lo says Australians often roast them and in Asian cuisine, they are often added to soups and curries.
"They have quite a neutral flavour and really can take on strong flavours, whilst having lots of health benefits," he said.
Originally established in 2003 in Sydney, Pro Bros Providore has specialised in supplying restaurants, hotels, and other food service establishments. But recently started 'direct to consumer' sales, via delivery, which was in the planning well before the lockdowns caused by coronavirus.
"We have been looking at retail for quite some time but COVID-19 really gave us the push to start that up," Mr Lo said. "We would really believe that everybody should have access to great produce and not just restaurants. This is an exciting new area for us and we can't wait to really launch into this space."

The company not only supplies mainstream and commodity lines but a lot of specialised and niche varieties. Mr Lo says winter vegetables sales have been steady with some fantastic root vegetables, and Jerusalem artichokes have been very popular this year.
"Also there's been some stunning produce coming from the Queensland strawberry season - it has been fantastic this year," he said. "Luxury truffles have also been as popular as ever too - even with the tightening of wallets in 2020."
