The latest attacks on trucks in Chile, where 535 vehicles have been set on fire so far, have led the Federation of Truck Owners of the South (Fedesur) to approve an indefinite strike nationwide.
According to the president of the group, Jose Villagran, the characteristics of the stoppage will be announced in detail in the next few hours. However, according to a statement issued by the Federation of Truck Owners of the Fifth Region (Fedequinta) through Twitter, “on Wednesday, August 26 starting at 11:59 p.m., cargo transportation will start a national demonstration due to the latest arson attacks in the south of our country.”
According to the statement, this measure was taken due to "the continuous robberies, assaults, the defenselessness of the national transport and the general public, and the lack of clear and firm answers from the Government."
During the early hours of Saturday, August 22, a truck traveling along the route between Collipulli and Angol was shot at and later burned in the Araucania Region. A family group was traveling aboard the vehicle and a 9-year-old girl was seriously injured after a projectile hit her back.
