Before the Corona situation, the social discussion on sustainable packaging solutions and the abandonment of plastic dominated events in the food industry. Due to the sudden pandemic and its corresponding impact on the fruit and vegetable trade, the topic now seems to have receded into the background. However, the potential of the new solutions is still high, confirms Eshref Derguti, packaging supplier at the Nuremberg wholesale market.
Some one and a half years ago, the first samples of sugar cane plastic and cornstarch bags appeared in the company's product range. Since then, the customer's needs have developed only marginally. "Consumers are still hesitant because of the higher prices, there is only little interest in the Nuremberg wholesale market. Furthermore, no new products are being introduced at the moment, due to Corona."
Derguti has been working at the Nuremberg Wholesale Market for about 10 years, and over the years he has probably seen some novelties in the field of packaging. Only a small part of these solutions have been able to prevail on the market in the end. "From my point of view, reusable packaging has the greatest potential," he explains.

Large demand for disposable facemasks
Derguti believes that the consequences of the Corona pandemic will also be felt in the packaging sector in the near future. "Corona has pushed sustainability and environmental compatibility into the background. In any case, the demand for disposable masks will continue to accompany us for a long time to come."
