Sales of PGI-protected purple garlic from Las Pedroñeras registered considerable growth in 2019. As reported by the PGI, sales outside of Spain increased by 41% compared to 2018. As for exports to the European Union, they have grown by 300%, while those to American countries have increased by 21%.
The entity says that this is due to the product being increasingly appreciated for its quality seal, which makes it stand out from the rest. This is why sales at supermarkets and greengrocers are on the rise.
Regarding 2020, the president of the PGI Ajo Morado de Las Pedroñeras, Elena Mesas, says that "at the beginning of the year, China closed its warehouses, as it was unable to export due to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, and the demand from countries like the United States was redirected to Spain,” where there was supply.
One of the objectives this year is to seek the consolidation of those sales and export trends. In fact, as Elena points out, the pandemic "could actually help open up new markets that are looking for quality products." Moreover, this has been a year with "a high quality harvest," as stated last July. More promotional actions are planned to be organized abroad.
