Colruyt has brought a new Belgian apple variety on the market - the Coryphée. This Belgian company is going to sell these exclusively in its own stores.
Three Belgian cultivation companies grow these apples. They are Neven Fruits, Wolfcarius, and Gebroeders Bangels. The supermarket chain will aid these farmers with further innovation. It'll invest in the companies too.
This help includes setting up nets. These protect the fruit on the tree against hail. The apple itself is more resistant to diseases. That means they don't as much pesticide treatment. So, the apples can be sold as 'low residue'.
Colruyt estimates it will sell about 30 tons of this variety. That will be under its Boni Selection label. These volumes will increase in the coming years. A complete breeding program preceded the introduction. That was done by the Belgian breeding company, Zouk.
