The production of the PO Giaccio Frutta increased by 10%

The PGI Melannurca Campana, a growing market

"The commercial campaign of the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) Melannurca Campana began in early September, and marked a successful trend from the very beginning. Requests were high both from the large-scale retail trade and the general markets, with interesting sales, consumption and prices. This fruit is increasingly being appreciated by the entire supply chain and the consumer. Compared to the same period last year, sales went up by 15%, and prices have also slightly increased this year". This is what Antonio Giaccio (photo), of the producer organization Giaccio Frutta, said.

This campaign was expected to have a very abundant production, in rotation to 2019, which was a discharge, but good on the commercial front. Unlike what was foreseen, volumes are expected to be in line with last year, if not below.

The production of Melannurca Campana Igp of the PO Giaccio Frutta increased by 10%; at the same time, the apple tree surfaces grew as well.

The campaign is even more promising. "Every year we install new plants, increasing the production on all our references - explained the manager - This year many young apple orchards of PGI Melannurca Campana have entered into full production, so we expect to work with at least 10% more product than the previous campaign."

The apples are placed on a bed of wood chips during the reddening phase, where they must ripen for at least ten days.

Speaking of quality, the entrepreneur said that "This is a good year, characterized by medium-large sizes, excellent organoleptic properties and homogeneous apples, free from visible external defects, such as hail damage. We expect a Melannurca campaign in line with the stone fruit and strawberries 2020 season."

The growing interest of the markets and consumers in recent years is the result of the praiseworthy work carried out by the Consortium for the protection of the PGI Melannurca Campana which, promotes on a national scale the countless nutraceutical properties of this fruit, encouraging its consumption.

In addition to the PGI Melannurca Campana, are Gala and Fuji apples, quinces, kiwis and pomegranates. The strawberries are in the transplanting phase, and the production is scheduled from the end of November onwards.
