At this point in time, more and more people seem to like Brussels sprouts than detest them, as they have been voted the nation's favourite green vegetable. According to a survey by Waitrose, they come out just ahead of broccoli.
Sprouts were top, chosen by 27 per cent – just 1 per cent ahead of those plumping for broccoli. Peas lagged behind, on just 17 per cent. Sprouts also proved to be more popular with men than with women.
They were the top pick for 34 per cent of those aged over 55, but they were far less popular with youngsters, being the favourite green veg with just 13 per cent of those in the 18-24 age group.
The poll of 2,000 adults also revealed the nation's favourite root vegetables. Carrots were resoundingly number one, chosen by 46 per cent of respondents – far ahead of the parsnip, which gained 26 per cent of the vote.
