Japanese import of Chinese vegetables reached lowest point in a decade

The Japanese import volume of Chinese vegetables reached its lowest point in a decade last year. Many restaurants closed their doors because of the outbreak of Covid-19. As a result, the market demand for peeled onions and other vegetables dropped. Importers and wholesale dealers encountered many obstacles because of the pandemic.

Data shows that nearly 20% of the vegetables on the Japanese market are imported, and 50% of the imported vegetables come from China. Most of these imported vegetables are destined for restaurants, cafes, etc. In addition to carrots and leek, there is also a huge demand for peeled onions and peeled garlic, because these products save a lot of time during food preparation.

Data from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries shows that Japan imported around 530,000 tons of vegetables from China in 2020. That was 10% less than in 2019, and the lowest import volume since 2011. The import of onions dropped by 20% in comparison with last year. The import of leeks dropped by 10%. And the import of garlic is also lower than last year.
