The Association of Mango Exporters of Mexico (EMEX, AC) had to issue the following observations because of the appearance of erroneous and distorted information in some media regarding the measures used to control the fruit fly in the state of Oaxaca.
According to Armando Celis, president of EMEX, “the national campaign against fruit flies in the state of Oaxaca began on October 26, 2020. Despite the ravages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, EMEX AC hastened its efforts to anticipate the registration period for mango orchards for export, including a request to SENASICA to extend that period from January 15, the normal date every year, to February 15.”
“The campaign against the fruit fly is being carried out in accordance with the operations manual prepared by the DGSV in accordance with standard 023. It's important to highlight the support of the CESVO (Oaxaca State Plant Health Committee) in carrying out the campaign,” he stated.
“Eleven PFAs, three authorized technicians, and a coordinator for the isthmus and coast areas are currently working in the state of Oaxaca in the areas that concentrate the largest number of hectares for export to the United States and other destinations. As of February 9, there are 11,687 registered hectares of the Ataulfo, Tommy Atkins, creole, and gold varieties mainly.”
Pest monitoring
“2,103 multi-lure monitoring traps have been installed in commercial orchards to monitor the pest. According to the export program, 20 bait stations must be installed per registered hectare,” the head of EMEX stated.
"In addition, 238,000 traps, which are an effective measure for combating the fruit fly because they contain an attractive and selective bait for the pest, have been installed in the isthmus area."
"It's important to note that land applications are part of a strategy to protect organic mango plantations," he stated. "The cooperative has carried out 4 land sprayings on areas of commercial orchards where there have been recurrent catches of flies."
