The Chinese government, the California Avocado Commission, and the United States Department of Agriculture have been in negotiations for years to realize the export of California avocados to the Chinese market. The first shipping container full of Californian avocados arrived in China in the first week of March.
The first shipping container carried 3,000 boxes of avocados exported by Mission Produce. The Chinese company Mr. Avocado distributed the avocados through Pagoda, a fruit store with 4,700 locations throughout China. Mr. Avocado also sold the Californian avocados in Guangzhou Jiangnan Wholesale Market and Shanghai Huizhan Wholesale Market.
Mission Produce is a leading company in the avocado market. The company produces, buys, packages, and distributes avocados in the Chinese market. They were the first to bring Peruvian, Chilean, and Colombian avocados to China.
According to company founder and CEO Steve Barnard: "Our mission was to supply top-quality avocados all year round. We still follow the same goal and also continue to expand and open up new markets all over China." Asia Sales Manager Thomas Padilla added that China is one of the largest export markets for agricultural products from the USA. This market can not easily be ignored. We realized the huge market potential of the Chinese market quite early on. We managed to pioneer this market and will continue to expand it."
There are quite a few countries with permission to supply the Chinese market with avocados. Each production area has their unique characteristics.
When asked about the outstanding qualities of Californian avocados, Mr. Avocado CEO John Wang stated: "California is relatively dry and enjoys an abundance of sunshine. The quality of Californian avocados is excellent, and most optimum in late winter and early spring. The avocados that come out of California have a clean fruit peel and the fruit flesh is meticulous without any blemish. These are currently the best avocados on the market. Current market supply primarily comes from Mexico at the moment, but their production season is coming to an end, and the product quality is not stable. Many avocados contain too much oil. The production season in Peru is at an early stage, so the supply volume is relatively small. The Chinese market is currently low on supply, and that is why the arrival of high-quality Californian avocados is so excellently timed. Out of all the avocado production areas in the USA, Central California is the nearest to China. Shipping takes 14-16 days, and air freight only takes 1 day. The Californian avocados are still very fresh when they enter the Chinese market."
"After this first shipping container is sold out, we will continue to import even more top-quality Californian avocados. They will arrive by sea as well as air," said John Wang.
"Since the establishment of Mr. Avocado in 2017, the company team has worked hard to overcome the poor reputation of green avocados in the Chinese market. They successfully introduced avocado consumption among Chinese consumers. Mr. Avocado imports avocados from Peru, Chile, Mexico, Colombia, and California in the USA. Mr. Avocado's ready-to-eat avocados account for nearly 75% of the avocado retail market in China.
