Kenya should reappear on the European mango market in September 2021 after an eight-year absence due to the presence of fruit flies in the orchards. “The dry trial we carried out and the samples submitted to the European Union have been approved, which puts us on the roadmap to start mass export in September,” as explained to Business Daily by Geoffrey Kiganiri, head of USAID Kenya Crops and Market System.
Pierre Gerbaud, horticultural consultant, indicated to CommodAfrica that “the European market imported 450,000 tons of mangoes in 2020, progressing from 40,000 to 50,000 tons.”
The mango exports from West Africa however dropped in 2020. Those from Ivory Coast went from about 30,000 tons to 25,000 tons because of the first lockdown in France and other European countries.
Bad season for Senegal in terms of production, with a drop in exports as well. As for Burkina Faso and Mali, they have had to face logistic difficulties.
The pressure from parasites is still present in West Africa but the installation of traps and treatment of the orchards seems to be bearing results.
