Paul van der Linde, Van der Linde:

"European carrot market is dead quiet"

"The carrot market is as dead as a doornail," says Paul van der Linde of Van der Linde in the Netherlands. He's also not very optimistic about its continuation. "It's almost Easter, and we should be going full speed ahead. But it's dead quiet and has been the whole season."

According to Paul, the European hospitality industry lockdown can explain these problematic sales. "That sector usually buys a lot of carrots, of which many are wasted. I can't explain it otherwise. There are fewer carrots in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany this season. The demand is, however, not picking up. We sold a lot of carrots last month when it was so cold. But that was mainly based on expectations, not demand."

"In recent years, demand from the Eastern European countries had sometimes started earlier. That was because of the hot, dry weather there. But demand from those countries is also lacking this year. You can see it in the prices, which have been falling for weeks. There's plenty of stock. When it was so cold, extra carrots were bought in hopes of high sales. Those are all still available too," Paul concludes.
