Price difference between Taiwanese and Hainanese wax apples shrinks

This is the peak period of the Taiwanese wax apple season. There are many different varieties such as the milk wax apple, black pearl wax apple, black diamond wax apple, and black steel wax apple. The most popular in the market, however, is the honey wind-chime wax apple.

There are several reasons for this situation, but the most important reason is that the Taiwanese honey wind-chime wax apple is, as the name suggests, sweet and delicate, and shaped like a bell. The outside of the wax apple is a glossy red that dazzles the eyes. These unique characteristics make the honey wind-chime wax apple from Taiwan immensely popular with consumers far and wide.

The product quality of Taiwanese wax apples is higher than anywhere else in the world. The production areas in Taiwan benefit from an exceptional natural environment, but there are differences in local conditions.

The highest-quality wax apples come from Liukuei in Kaohsiong and Pingtung. This year, however, the weather conditions were not great. Around Chinese Spring Festival [12 February, 2021] the weather was quite cold. Some of the wax apple trees already sprouted their first flowers, and they suffered frost damage. That is why the current supply volume is smaller than usual. The production volume is expected to recover once the trees have gone through their second flower season of the year.

"This is also the time of the year when wax apples from Hainan enter the market. The price difference between Taiwanese wax apples and Hainanese wax apples has grown smaller in recent years. The cost price of packaging and labor is lower in Hainan. Furthermore, consumers can not tell the origin of wax apples from their appearance. That is why the packaging decides the price. The more exquisite the packaging is, the higher the price. But there is still a definite difference in flavor between Taiwanese and Hainanese wax apples. The Taiwanese wax apples are more fragrant." This is according to Mr. Rock Yen of Shanghai Queen Want Trading Co., Ltd.

In addition to wax apples, the Taiwanese sugar apple is another popular Taiwanese fruit. The supply season of Taiwanese sugar apples begins every year in the middle of October and continues until the middle of April in the subsequent year, unless the weather in April is not yet very hot, then the supply season extends into May.

The product quality of sugar apples is most stable between December and February in the subsequent year. There are natural sugar apples and those grown under artificial light. The supply shifts to sugar apples grown under artificial light in April when the temperatures rise. The shelf life of sugar apples declines when the weather grows warmer and they turn soft. Farmers grow sugar apples under artificial light to avoid these problems. Chinese sugar apples are not that common in the Chinese market. That is mainly because the sugar apples stay on the tree for a long time and the blossom season is quite late, but there are some large-scale sugar apple plantations in Hainan and Yunnan.

The most popular Taiwanese sugar apple on the Chinese market is the pineapple sugar apple. The large-eye sugar apple has a shorter shelf life than the pineapple sugar apple, and is less suitable for long-distance transport. That is why their sales are limited. Chinese consumers rarely encountered sugar apples in recent years, but now the level of plantation technology has improved and sugar apple plantations are more widely distributed. That is why these sugar apples are gaining popularity in the Chinese market. Consumers may hesitate when they see the appearance of sugar apples, but the flavor is excellent. Once consumers taste the sugar apple, they will come back for more. The popularity of Taiwanese sugar apples in the Chinese market continues to grow every year," said Mr. Rock Yen.
