CEO of CropLife Latin America:

'Latin America & Caribbean could become one of the great food-producing regions of the world'

The CEO of CropLife Latin America, José Perdomo, recently issued a statement saying: "Latin America and the Caribbean is essential for food security and the provision of public environmental services at a global level.” The region produces 12% of food globally, compared to the United States and Canada who produce 11%, the European Union 11%, India 11%, China 24% and other developing countries 29 %.

He added that Latin America and the Caribbean currently represent 16% of global agricultural exports and 12% of world agricultural production. Perdomo indicated that Latin America has the opportunity to produce food every day more efficiently, with greater productivity, at a lower cost, since it has the conditions and the human capacity to achieve it.

Regional challenges
The CEO of CropLife Latin America indicated that there is currently concern about food safety and food costs. In this regard, he said that the fragility of Latin America has international organizations on alert, since the coronavirus revealed many deficiencies.

“Increasing agricultural productivity in a more sustainable way continues to be a challenge. Pests in the tropics are a differential that is not being considered in the European political agenda. The modernization of the laws that the Europeans want is going to affect us at all levels and we have to understand what this implies,” he told blueberriesconsulting.com.
