Traders and locals in Kenya’s Kajiado county are upset, as tomato prices rose by more than 50% in just a month. According to these traders, the acute shortage of tomatoes was the result of the Kenya-Tanzania stalemate after the Jubilee government banned the importation of maize from the latter nation due to "high level of aflatoxins".
Tanzania exports tons of tomatoes to Kenya every day but has been withholding its produce as a reprisal to Kenya's ban on its maize. One Kenyan trader businessman said the situation was even worse with the closure of hotels and restaurants that buy tomatoes in bulk. "I plead the government to open hotels so that we can get customers for our tomatoes," he said.
