Belarus: Eurotorg sees full-year revenue up 6.8%, despite 'challenging environment'
Eutororg, Belarus's biggest retailer, has reported a 6.8% increase in revenue in full-year 2020, supported by a 3.6% increase in like-for-like sales, and new store openings. Revenue at the group totalled BYN5.1bln (€1.63bln) for the full-year, it said, while adjusted EBITDA rose 43.9% to BYN448.5mln (€143.7mln).

Italy’s MD to open 47 new supermarkets this year
MD ended 2020 as the second largest discount retailer in Italy and the third largest in sales, with a market share of 15.5% (15.1% in 2019), new data has shown. Net sales were up 15% year-on-year, to €2.81bln, well above the average growth rate for the discount segment in Italy (+8.7%), while net profit increased by 56%, to €68.5mln, reports Gdonews. The retailer opened 39 new outlets (directly-owned and affiliated) during 2020, and the plan for this year envisages 47 store openings (35 direct and 12 affiliated), with sales area of between 1,000 and 1,500 sq. m. Also planned is the restructuring of 35 existing supermarkets.

Ahead of expected IPO, Pepco takes PEPCO brand to Spain
Discount retailer Pepco Group said it would open its first PEPCO branded store in Spain this month and 10 more by September, stepping up its expansion ahead of an expected initial public offering (IPO) this year. The group, which also trades as Poundland in the United Kingdom and Dealz in Europe, is part of South African conglomerate Steinhoff, which is still battling the fallout of a 2017 accounting scandal.

UK: Sainsbury's ex-boss buys into grocery app market
Former Sainsbury's boss Justin King has taken a stake in the fast-growing grocery delivery app market. The Snappy Group said Mr King was now a senior adviser to it and had made "a significant personal investment". The Dundee-based group's Snappy Shopper app service offers goods from local convenience stores in 30 minutes. Snappy Shopper does not claim to be as fast as fellow start-ups such as Weezy, Dija, Zapp and Getir. However, it does cover much more of the UK, with most of its rivals currently confined to parts of London and selected other cities.
